And, indeed, Los Angeles covers a lot of territory -- stretching 75 or more miles from Ventura to Beaumont and from Santa Clarita to San Clemente. Most people also believe that Los Angeles is nothing but freeways. However, Los Angeles has the nation's worst traffic congestion. The driving hours refer to weekdays and busy holidays. Weekends have lighter traffic.

This highway connects La Canada with Los Angeles through Glendale. Light congestion during morning and evening rush hours.

Interstate 5 experiences heavy traffic during morning and evening rush hours. Certain interchanges are densely congested during peak driving hours: 5/210, 5/101, 5/110, 5/10, 5/605, 5/710.

Interstate 10 has light congestion in Santa Monica and Pasadena but is very heavy in Los Angeles city and the downtown area.

This highway has moderate congestion. Average speed is 55 mph. During rush hours the average speed is 5-20 mph.

This highway has light congestion. Average speed is 62 mph. During rush hours the average speed is 10-35 mph.

101
IThe 405/101 interchange in the SF Valley is the most congested interchange in the nation. If you must use the 101 in the SF Valley be prepared for traffic. Driving the 101 in Los Angeles City and downtown is not too congested if your headed south between 10 am - 3 pm, 7 pm - 6 am or North before 2 pm. Average speed during peak congestion hours is 5 - 20 mph.

105
Interstate 105 has moderate congestion because it connects with LAX. The off ramps to LAX experience heavy traffic. If you are taking this freeway to LAX avoid driving during morning and evening rush hours. East of LAX traffic is moderate with average speeds of 65 mph, and 35 mph during rush hours.

110
Interstate 110 has light congestion in Long Beach and Pasadena but is very heavy in Los Angeles city and the downtown area. Use the car pool lanes where available. Avoid driving between 7 am - 10 am, 2:30 pm - 9 pm.

118
This is the main highway through Simi Valley and North San Fernando Valley. It has light congestion during the day and moderate congestion during rush hours. The 118/210 West interchange is congested between 4 pm - 7 pm.

Highway 134 connects Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. The areas surrounding the 134 are densely populated. Average speed during peak congestion hours is 5 - 20 mph.

You will not experience much traffic on this freeway if you avoid driving north of Victory between 3 pm - 6 pm or south between 7 am - 9 am.

210
Interstate 210 extends from the San Fernando Valley to San Bernadino. Certain areas experience heavy traffic during rush hours, Pasadena, Altadena, Duarte, Monrovia, Sylmar. However, car pool lanes available in some locations make traveling easier. The 118/210 West interchange is congested between 5 pm - 7 pm. The 210/134 interchange is congested between 4 pm - 7 pm. Average speed during rush hours is 5 - 30 mph depending on the density of the city your driving through.

405
Interstate 405 in the San Fernando Valley is congested in the southbound lanes between 6:30 am - 8:30 am and in the northbound lanes between 2:30 pm - 7 pm. However, once the 405 leaves the valley southbound heavy congestions begins. Do not drive it northbound from Santa Monica to the SF Valley between 2:30 pm - 7:30 pm unless you are listening to a wonderful teaching by Chancellor Hayford and have hours to sit and soak up his knowledge. You can drive south from the SF Valley to Santa Monica between 9 am - 3 pm, 7 pm - 6 am. Average speed during peak congestion hours is 0 - 20 mph depending what direction you are headed.

Interstate 605 has moderate congestion in Long Beach and Orange County, but heavy congestion in Cerritos, Norwalk, Los Angeles.and the City of Industry. Average speed during peak congestion hours is 5- 30 mph depending on what city your driving through.

710
Interstate 710 has light/moderate congestion in Pasadena and Long Beach. It experiences moderate/ heavy congestion in Compton, South Gate and Commerce. Average speed during rush hours is 10 - 40 mph depending on the density of the city your driving through.
