General Course Info
Quarter vs. Semester
The King’s operates on a traditional quarter calendar. There
are three quarters in the academic year which occur from September
to June. During the academic year each session is ten weeks in length
with an additional week for examinations. This constrasts with a
semester system, which has Fall and Spring semesters of approximately
16 weeks (including a final examination week).
Course Formats
The King's offers courses in three formats: onground, online, and
modular.
- Onground courses are 10 weeks in length with
the final exam occuring on the 11th week.
- Online courses are 6 weeks in length with the
final exam occuring at the end of the 6th week. Each quarter contains
two online sessions. Thus online session II ends after the corresponding
onground quarter. Students are allowed to enroll in a maximum
of 2 courses for each session unless special permission is given.
- Modulars are typically three day courses beginning
at 8:30 a.m. ending at 6 p.m. each day. Modulars can be scheduled
on two consecutive weekends with class starting Friday night and
continuing all day Saturday. The next weekend would then follow
the same schedule. Finals for these types of classes are scheduled
approximately 4 weeks after the last day of the course. All course
work is due on the date of the final.
Hours Invested in Each Course
The majority of courses are equivalent to three quarter hours of
credit and thus require a minimum of twenty-five contact hours.
Each credit represents one fifty-minute period of class instruction
for each of the ten weeks (3 unit courses meet approximately 2 hr.
45 min. each week), plus approximately two-to-three hours of out-of-class
involvement (studying, writing, reading) per credit. If you take
a 3 unit course, schedule at least 6-9 hours in addition to the
class time for homework each week. |
